SUMMARY

It’s Mardi Gras time in New Orleans. Attending a masquerade ball, wealthy fashion designer Caterine Doucette, dressed as a shimmering ice princess, has her cool façade shattered when she encounters Bayou-born ex-cop Remi Michaud, disguised as the darkly handsome pirate Jean Lafitte. Their true identities hidden, the princess and the pirate come together in an explosion of passion and desire. But when fantasy turns to cold reality, Caterine panics and disappears into the night, unaware this man will soon be sent to rescue her from a killer and will capture her heart.

Orphaned at a young age, Caterine grew up in the home of her beloved grandmother, Miss Dauphine Doucette. Despised by her Doucette relatives for the devotion she received from her grandmère, Caterine suffered years of envy and disdain. The young Caterine learned quickly how easily the love she had to give could be thrown back in her face.

After Miss Dauphine turns over ownership of the century-old fashion house, Ma Chérie, to Caterine, an attempt is made on her life, for there are those in the Doucette family who will stop at nothing to possess what they feel is their rightful inheritance.

Not knowing whom to trust, Caterine goes into hiding. Miss Dauphine, convinced someone in her own family is behind the attack, hires Remi, now working for a private security company, to track her down and unmask her would-be assassin.

Learning that the affluent Caterine Doucette is the beautiful princess he held in his arms at the ball, Remi is torn between his growing desire for her and painful memories of another rich socialite’s betrayal. Caterine finds herself falling in love with Remi, but old embedded pain leaves her afraid to open her heart.

Down in the Big Easy, Caterine and Remi must learn to trust one another if they are to survive in a world of family greed and ruthless revenge.

Immortal at the Edge of the World by Gene Doucette

Immortal at the Edge of the World
Book 3 of the Immortal Series
by Gene Doucette
Immortal-Edge-of-World-Hi-Res-Cover

Release Date: October 2 , 2014
Genre: FICTION/Fantasy/General & Fantasy/Contemporary
ISBN e-book:   978-1-61213-276-1
Available from: Amazon, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, and TWCS PH

MY THOUGHTS

This was a fitting conclusion to the Immortal Series with many favourite characters reappearing to provide answers for questions that were raised from the very first book. However the author is not content to just play with existing people, he successfully adds some new persona’s to the mix, who help mould a whole new story and give dimension to Adam. Gene crafts another backdrop of events and misfortunes culminating in a resolution that successfully satisfies both the current trajectory and the issues raised in previous novels.

There is Adam and there is Eve, two extraordinary people who seem to have crossed paths many times throughout history. What is the mystery that surrounds Eve and why is she so elusive. Why is Claire so distant, what happened to scare her away? Immortal at the Edge of the World has all the answers.

I’m not sure how I feel about Adam and Eve and what is related about their previous relationship. It’s not pretty, though I never expected it would be. Having said that, I never imagined that Adam would have treated anyone so poorly, regardless of the era in which such events occurred. He always seemed such a gentleman, even if reluctantly so. The one point I took from this particular circumstance was that one event does not necessarily define a person, but your actions can certainly have a lasting impact on others. Thank God we can’t all live to be 60 000 yrs old, imagine the grudges people would hold!

Adam and Claire is a different story again, I’m not sure I believed Claires reasoning nor could I understand how Adam could not know. (Though I can’t really go into that without giving some very obvious spoilers away - so that is a conversation for people who have read the series).

There is a new heroine in Immortal at the Edge of the World  who shows a great deal of promise, someone who will hopefully stick around for a bit longer yet. I wonder what her life expectancy is?

Realistically I think the tale of the Immortal Adam could go on forever. For a man that has lived for 60 000 years he surely has to have a lot more stories to be told… and I hear the author is now publishing short stories of our favourite Immortal Man, all of which should be available on Amazon - so go and check them out.

Please read my Disclaimer

~~SUMMARY~~

Immortal-Edge-of-World-3D-Bookstack“What I was currently doing with my time and money . . . didn’t really deserve anyone else’s attention. If I was feeling romantic about it, I’d call it a quest, but all I was really doing was trying to answer a question I’d been ignoring for a thousand years.”

In his very long life, Adam had encountered only one person who seemed to share his longevity: the mysterious red-haired woman. She appeared throughout history, usually from a distance, nearly always vanishing before he could speak to her.

In his last encounter, she actually did vanish—into thin air, right in front of him. The question was how did she do it? To answer, Adam will have to complete a quest he gave up on a thousand years earlier, for an object that may no longer exist.

If he can find it, he might be able to do what the red-haired woman did, and if he can do that, maybe he can find her again and ask her who she is . . . and why she seems to hate him.

“You are being watched. Move your loved ones to safety . . . trust nobody.”

But Adam isn’t the only one who wants the red-haired woman. There are other forces at work, and after a warning from one of the few men he trusts, Adam realizes how much danger everyone is in. To save his friends and finish his quest he may be forced to bankrupt himself, call in every favor he can, and ultimately trade the one thing he’d never been able to give up before: his life.

From the author of Immortal and Hellenic Immortal comes Immortal at the Edge of the World, the breathtaking conclusion to the best-selling trilogy. Will Adam survive?

Excerpt:

Darcy clenched her teeth, released Tellius’s hand, and took the lead. Before she knew it, she was running, strength coming from some hidden reserves of adrenaline. She crested the ridge and swung into Archaios’s cave, ignoring the giant white dragon and the stabs of cold that informed her shadow creatures were nearby.
Sam lay on a pallet of furs near the spring of water in the back of the cave, with her golden hair fanned out around her pale face and her eyes fixed on Perry, who knelt at her side. Lewis and Dean, who also looked pale and ill, but not nearly as much, sat nearby with their backs against the cave wall, staring into space.
“Sam!” Darcy cried, diving beside her best friend and taking up her cold hand.
Sam’s lashes fluttered, and she squeezed Darcy’s hand briefly. Her blue eyes, somehow paler than before, caught Darcy’s gaze, and she smiled. “You made it,” she whispered. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
“What do you mean? Don’t talk like that!”
Sam smiled. She was thin—her chin and jaw looked sharp and angular, her eyes sunken. The pallor of her skin held a blue tint, and her hand lay limp in Darcy’s. Darcy cast an anguished look at Perry and saw in his expression a lack of hope. She shook her head and looked back down at Sam.
“No. No, no, no.” Darcy brought both hands together over Sam’s, sandwiching her limp one between them, and tried to send warmth and strength into her. But she had no magical connection with Sam, no marriage bond that allowed for the transference of power, and Sam did not warm or stir.
“It’s okay,” Sam whispered. “I’m ready. I understand now—what my purpose was here. I’ve done what I was sent to do, and now I can rest, and I don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
Darcy’s face crinkled, and her vision blurred with hot tears.
“You’re going to be just fine, Darcy—you know that, right?” Sam’s voice was barely a breath of air. “Remember, why you do what you do matters. And . . .” Her gaze left Darcy’s and strayed to the ceiling. “Life is greater than death.” She sighed. “I’ve always believed in you, Darcy.”
Darcy sniffed and gasped. “I know, Sam. I’ve never deserved your friendship. I wasn’t worthy of your loyalty.”
Sam smiled again, her eyes still fixed on the ceiling. “That’s why you needed it.”
Darcy bit her lip, her chest heaving. “I love you, Sam. Please don’t go!”
“I love you, too,” Sam said, looking back at her, then at Perry. “And you. But in different ways.”
Her smile was teasing, and it tore Darcy’s heart to shreds. Darcy bowed her head and sobbed.
Sam’s fingers fluttered. “I’m very tired,” she whispered.
“Do something,” Perry said to Darcy, his voice breaking.
Darcy shook her head. “I don’t know what to do.”
“I’m very tired,” Sam said again, her voice remote, her volume dropping even more. “But I needed to tell you one more thing, Darcy.”
Darcy leaned close. “Yes?” she asked, her face hovering over Sam’s.
Sam speared her with an intense gaze, and then she turned and nodded toward the far wall of the cave where Boitheia stood watching them.
“She will betray you,” Sam said in the barest of whispers.
Darcy parted her lips and knit her brow.

“Wh—”

“Let her,” Sam said.

Summary:

The-Bone-Whistle-3D-Paperback-eReader
Darcy burned with the pain of knowing she’d failed. What happened when a prophecy didn’t come true? It must not have been much of a prophecy in the first place. And if they couldn’t trust in that, then they couldn’t trust in anything at all.

Five years ago, Darcy first received the prophecy of the Six, which stated she and her friends would save the land of Alitheia from a shadowy foe. For five years, she hasn’t known what the end will look like, but she certainly didn’t expect this.

Thrust back into Alitheia through unexpected means, Darcy winds up alone, scared, and without her recent memory. As she struggles to regain her lost memories and reunite with the ones she loves, she pieces together the prophecies and the oracles to find they all converge into one story¾a story that tells her just how much she’ll have to give to save both worlds, and everyone she loves.

Pursued through Alitheia by forces desperate to kill them, Darcy and her friends take a journey fraught with danger that will lead them, inevitably, to the final confrontation with the Shadow. Armed with newfound knowledge of how the prophecy of the Six will play out, Darcy and the others must have faith in the face of mounting odds and adversity. Ultimately, the greatest courage of all belongs not to those who give something of themselves, but to those who let go of what they could never control.

Filled with stunning losses, heart-wrenching reunions, unexpected twists, and the power of love and sacrifice, the conclusion to The Gateway Chronicles will leave you breathless and begging for more from author K. B. Hoyle.

Little does he know that meeting his baby brother’s girlfriend and her sister, Megan, will change everything.

Megan Carson has taken a few wrong turns in her life, but she’s doing her best to get back on track. When she meets Chloe, the little girl swiftly worms her way into Megan’s heart. The opportunity to help Paul out and watch his daughter appears to be a blessing in disguise. She quickly volunteers to be Chloe’s live-in nanny.

Everything is working well until the three of them head back to Ohio for Chris and Elizabeth’s wedding. Paul has a little too much to drink during the reception, and he and Megan end up sharing a heated kiss. When he wakes up the next day, he has a pounding headache but remembers nothing.

Megan, however, isn’t willing to forget. Over the past few months since she’s been playing nanny, her feelings for Paul have changed. He is everything she never knew she wanted, and now that she knows there might be something there, she’s going after what she wants—Paul.

Sherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn't good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.

At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. By the time the story finished, it was one of the top ten read stories on the site, and her readers were encouraging her to write more.

Seven years later, Sherri is the author of seven full-length novels, and one short story. Writing has become a creative outlet for Sherri that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions, while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create. She is most well known for her Finding Anna Series about a young woman rescued from being a sex slave by a wealthy Dominant. Sherri’s eighth novel, Crossing The Line, is scheduled to release September 2014.

Review by Witchypoo - Guest Reviewer

This book is basically a murder mystery, but the main characters are a little different to what is normally on offer in your average story.  Sheyla and Mac both go through a bit of a tough time, but that is to be expected considering the nature of their introduction. I enjoyed how their relationship evolved, despite the suspicion that surrounded Sheyla.

The other suspects were quite interesting, though a couple of them are not such nice people. This added to the "who-done-it" aspect nicely.

The sex scenes were not overdone, which was surprising. There were a few intimate encounters, but at no point did I feel confronted by the way in which the transgender relationships were portrayed. I was comfortable with the reading material.

Overall it was good read ... 3/5 stars

Summary:

After beloved San Francisco anchorwoman Michelle Osher is found nearly decapitated in her palatial Nob Hill apartment, suspicion focuses immediately on her wealthy, arrogant husband, Paul. Inspector Mac Fleet and his partner are assigned the sensational case, and they quickly uncover an all-too-familiar pattern linking the widowed spouse to Sheyla Samonte, a part-time waitress enjoying a lavish lifestyle on Paul Osher’s dime. The pair of seasoned detectives assume she wanted a promotion from mistress to wife.

The investigation turns on its head when they discover Sheyla, a drop-dead gorgeous dancer born and raised in the Philippines, works at Pearls of Asia, a stylish restaurant featuring a cast of exotic transsexual performers who serve up flirtatious teasers along with delicious cocktails. Mac crawls down a rabbit hole and comes face to face with the restaurant’s uniquely captivating servers—Diamond, Reyna, Nadia, and Ashley—and unveils a fascinating lifestyle full of drama, humor, and high heels.

When Sheyla refuses to cooperate unless Inspector Fleet takes her to brunch, he agrees even though he knows it’s outside the lines of police protocol. Mac soon finds himself dealing with his own set of personal demons, unable to decide whether to arrest Sheyla or ask her on a date.

The ensuing investigation reveals infidelities, betrayals, and a host of people who might want Michelle Osher dead. But as the case heats up, so does Mac’s romantic interest in Sheyla, whose stunning beauty and charming personality compel him to question her involvement, but not her courage, and to cross the line between his personal impulses and professional responsibilities. Convinced of Sheyla’s innocence, Mac devotes himself to finding the real killer. Ultimately, he is moved to take actions he never dreamed of to discover the truth about the case, Sheyla, and himself.

Towel Day Tribute to Douglas Adams

Give Away... Why?

To celebrate Towel Day.
To honour Douglas Adams, an author supportive of derivative fiction.
To introduce a novel of a similar vein to The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy (see below)

It's no secret that The Writer's Coffee Shop's first major success was a work of derivative fiction. Whilst E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey, was not the first fan fiction to be pulled, reworked and published, it certainly appears to have been the piece responsible for the often heated debate on the merits of such endeavours.

Douglas Adams is one of many authors who embraced derivative works as this article; "Hitchhiker's Fan-Site Started By Douglas Adams Shows Why Authors Shouldn't Panic Over Derivative Works" from the bring a towel dept of Case Studies by techdirt, indicates.

Case Studies by techdirt have explored how content creators in a variety of mediums have handled derivative works, particularly musicians, TV/film and authors (all very interesting articles). They concluded that...

"the responses are predictably varied, with some creators embracing derivatives, some abhorring them, some that draw the line on commercial use, and others that use derivatives to build even further works. The least controversial of the lot is work done by fans, of course. Few creators want to go to war with fans that love their work so much they make fan films, or write fan fiction."

Douglas Adams not only allowed derivatives of THHGTTG, he also started the site h2g2 The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition to encourage it - a phenomenal, generous and memorable way to give back to his fans. Is it any wonder that he is remembered each year world wide on towel day?

So wear a towel, take a picture of it and share the love with your online community. And if you feel like it enter the Give Away for a chance to win one of three great prizes... The Amazon Gift Card, a copy of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or a copy of Everybody Out of the Laundromat, I Need to Think by Phil G Glenn (see summary and cover below)

...Oh and check out the site http://www.techdirt.com they have some awesome case studies.

When the ordinary life of Virgil Blaine crosses the path of the even more ordinary Doug Coulthard, it sets off a series of extra-ordinary events. Doug Coulthard is a Filing Clerk and the President of the Unpublished People’s Poet’s Party –Political Unit (UPPPPU) where a catastrophe has just happened; two of his long time members have been published. The UPPPPU goes on a recruiting drive by distributing leaflets, one of which finds its way into Virgil Blaine’s pocket. Virgil Blaine, who is a slight poet himself, attends one of the meetings where he meets Forward Slash who offers Virgil Blaine a job. The offer comes with two things Virgil Blaine has never had; a job and a car and on a whim he accepts. The problem is, through no effort of his own, his position is suddenly elevated. Virgil Blaine says the job is ‘messing with his DNA – Deliberate Non-Achiever’ and he misses his old life and so hatches a plan to get it back…

Though very ordinary, Doug Coulthard has the distinction of being only one of four hundred and thirty one Earth creatures who have been abducted by Aliens. The Aliens took Doug to the Canis Minor and back, a round trip of 3.02 parsecs. Due to the spacecraft’s immense velocity Doug was left with an annoying and sudden ‘tic’ which is to nod his head up and down rather abruptly every four minutes. And now the Aliens are back to take Doug on a ‘quite a few years since we last picked you up’ Reunion Party which turns out to be one of the worst experiences of Doug’s life….
